A Tight Race: Leadership Shifts and Drama Unfold in the Vendée Globe
The 10th edition of the Vendée Globe continues to deliver high-drama, with sailors battling fierce conditions and relentless competition in this legendary solo, nonstop, unassisted around-the-world race.
Charlie Dalin (Macif-Santé-Prevoyance) held the lead for a week, but a nerve-wracking lead shrink is forcing him to dig deep. Though he seemed to have made a decisive break thanks to a southerly route, fierce rival Sébastien Simon (Groupe-Dubreuil) has closed the distance to within 165 miles.
Simon suffered a significant setback this weekend when his starboard foil, a key appendage that lifts the monohull and allows for high speeds, was heavily damaged. He described the moment of impact, feeling something was wrong as his boat suddenly lost responsiveness. The damage occurred while he was attempting to increase speed, seeking to capitalize on improved sea conditions.
Despite the setback, Simon remains optimistic, determined to continue racing with one intact foil.
"I’m going to go to the end," he declared, focusing on preserving his lead over the rest of the fleet, while acknowledging that surprises are still to come along this grueling journey.
Behind the leaders, Yoann Richomme (Paprec-Arkéa) and Thomas Ruyant (Vulnerable) maintain their pursuit, relentlessly racking up the miles as they navigate decoded a challenging stretch defined by sharp shifts in wind direction.
Another frontrunner, Jérémie Beyou (Charal), a veteran of the Vendée Globe with a third-place finish in 2016-2017, is grappling with the aftermath of a week of violent depressions that have significantly altered the race dynamics.
"The conditions haven’t been easy for ten days, getting around this big depression completely changed my race, it completely put me out of the front battle I was in," Beyou confessed, expressing his eagerness to end the stretches of tumultuous sailing and find more favorable conditions.
The battle, however, is far from confined to the front-runners. The solitary sailors are all facing the relentless onslaught of powerful depressions that have battered the fleet.
Among these battling voyagers is amateur Antoine Cornic (Human-Real Estate), who reported sail damage on Sunday as he struggled against gusts reaching 75 knots (nearly 140 kilometers per hour) aboard his older generation straight daggerboard boat.
As of December 9th, only 38 of the original 40 monohulls remain, with Maxime Sorel (V-and-B-Monbana-Mayenne) and Louis Burton (Office-Valley) forced to withdraw in recent weeks. Jingkun Xu (Team-Haikou) became the latest skipper to enter the Indian Ocean, leaving hungarian Szabolcs Weöres (New-Europe) as the final solo sailor still traversing the South Atlantic after 30 days at sea.
The drama and excitement of the Vendée Globe continue to unfold, as each day brings new challenges, new strategies, and new stories of courage and resilience from the remarkable sailors who have answered the call of this extraordinary race.

**Host:** Welcome back to nautical news! The Vendée Globe, that gruelling solo, nonstop, around-the-world race, continues to deliver non-stop thrills and drama. With us today is sailing expert, Alex Reed, to break down the latest developments. Alex Reed, thanks for joining us.
**Alex Reed:** Thank you for having me! This Vendée Globe is proving to be one for the ages.
**Host:** Absolutely! Charlie Dalin seemed to have taken a commanding lead, but Sébastien Simon is hot on his heels. What’s happening out there on the water?
**Alex Reed:** It’s a real nail-biter! Dalin chose a southerly route which initially gave him a significant advantage, but Simon has clawed his way back, and the gap is now down to a mere 165 miles. It’s incredibly tight!
**Host:** And Simon’s had to overcome a real setback as well. Tell us about that.
**Alex Reed:** Right, a devastating blow for Simon is the serious damage to his starboard foil. It happened while he was trying to capitalize on some favorable conditions and push for speed. The foil is crucial for these boats, allowing them to lift out of the water and reach incredible speeds.
**Host:** That must be incredibly disheartening for Simon.
**Alex Reed:** Definitely. But he’s showing remarkable resilience! He remains determined to keep racing, even with just one functioning foil.
**Host:** An inspiring story of perseverance! What can we expect next in this tightly contested race?
**Alex Reed:** It’s anyone’s game! Dalin can’t afford any mistakes with Simon breathing down his neck. And don’t forget about Richomme and Ruyant, who are also right in the mix. This Vendée Globe is shaping up to be a classic!
**Host:** We’ll be sure to keep a close eye on it! Thanks for sharing your insights, Alex Reed.
**Alex Reed:** My pleasure, always happy to talk sailing!
