It’s a rather dramatic story experienced by Fanny, a 36-year-old young woman. A year ago, while pregnant, she was urgently hospitalized in a hospital in Lyon for cramps and a body that literally tripped. “In three days, I had purple fingernails, I was leaving,” she explains to our colleagues from Parisian.
Doctors first think of sepsis, but diagnose listeriosis. The reason ? A contaminated vegetable milk cheese. “I regularly consumed plant products, I was not suspicious once pregnant, on the contrary. I cried, I told myself that my oldest was going to become an orphan”.
The cause ? A vegan cheese
She finds herself having to give birth prematurely and the Regional Health Agency contacts her to find out what she had eaten to catch listeriosis. She then read the list of recalled products, and it clicked: a cheese from the Jay&Joy brand, the European leader in vegan cheese, was affected, and she ate it. “It was the same product, the same dates, the same strain of bacteria,” she explains.
If today, everyone is doing well, she recounts the ordeal that followed. Indeed, Fanny contacted the brand. “I wanted them to communicate so that it wouldn’t happen to others, but I was confused on the phone, it was odious. They questioned my word by calling me a liar”, says -She.
Now she lives in constant fear while shopping. “From now on, as soon as I go shopping, I no longer have confidence in anything,” she proclaims. “I learned that the Jay&Joy company had been taken over. These people are not responsible for what happened before. They should not pay for the others. But they will have to be more transparent!”
Five “severe cases” of listeriosis were detected among Jay&Joy consumers at the time.
