The public health unit (PSP) of the Paris prosecutor’s office has been seized since June 1 of several cases of listeriosis linked to the consumption of products from vegan cheese specialist Jay & Joy, the public prosecutor said on Friday. Confirming an article from the L’Informé site, the prosecution said it did not want to say more “in order to preserve future investigations”.
Jay & Joy had to cease production and marketing of its products in January 2023 following five people, including four pregnant women, presented with serious cases of listeriosis. According to health authorities, the four pregnant women who contracted the disease gave birth prematurely.
Investigations revealed “irregularities in the company, in particular concerning the control of the risk of microbiological contamination of products manufactured within the factory”, had then pointed out the General Directorate of Health. In cessation of payments following this “serious quality crisis”, the manufacturer of vegan cheeses has since been taken over in June by investors.
The new CEO of Jay & Joy, César Augier, told AFP not to be “aware of what is happening from the point of view of the investigation”, and to have “implemented all possible measures so that a situation like this never happens once more”.
On its Facebook and Instagram page, the company announced that its products have been available for sale online once more since this week. In 2022, it had achieved 2.8 million euros in turnover thanks to its vegan products.
When Jay & Joy was taken over, Mr. Augier had indicated that its two founders, Mary Carmen and Eric Jähnke, were to work for some time as “consultants” in order to “ensure continuity”. He told AFP on Friday that the latter had “assured a transfer” before the takeover of the company, and that they were today “not at all involved” in its operation.
