Veeam made official on Wednesday the acquisition of the Californian startup Alcyonspecializing in AI-driven data backup and protection in environments Microsoft 365. This completes an interest shown from the beginning towards a reality financed both at the founding act and, above all, in the 21 million dollar round of 2023. The amount of the transaction was not disclosed.

The startup was started by Niraj Tolia and Vaibhav Kamra, former founders of Cratea company specialized in backup and disaster recovery of Kubernetes clusters, already acquired by Veeam in 2020. Following the latest operation, Tolia was appointed new Ctoa role in which he will lead product strategy and engineering activities for Veeam Data Cloud (Vdc), the cloud backup and recovery platform built on Microsoft Azure.

Alcion’s flagship product is a cloud platform for data backupwhich companies store in Microsoft 365 environments. One of the differentiators is the speed of installation. Customers can start creating backups of their 365 environments within ten minutes of signing up. Using the platform does not require technical training or additional software installation, which can be time-consuming in large organizations.

The platform also includes security elements such as integration with Microsoft’s Defender solution. When malware is detected in a 365 environment, Alcion automatically backs up user data to ensure it can be restored later. The platform also schedules backups during periods of high activity, so that the information produced is backed up immediately after it is created.
