Bank Vdk is the only Belgian bank, among 55 financial institutions screened worldwide, to totally ban any investment in nuclear weapons industries, according to a report “Don’t Bank on the Bomb” by the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and the Dutch peace organization PAX.
“We hope that our policy will encourage other financial institutions in Belgium to stop investing the savings of Belgians directly or indirectly in the production of nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons have enormous destructive power and make no distinction between military and civilian targets. Their use is therefore, in our opinion, never justified”, comments one at Vdk.
Vdk is not the only Belgian bank cited in the report: KBC and Degroof Petercam are part of a list of 54 “Runners-Up”, i.e. financial institutions which have taken steps to restrict investments in the manufacturers of nuclear weapons but without going as far as the 55 financial institutions included in the “Hall of fame” of the report.
