VCÖ review: Almost every second new car is an SUV

The share of SUVs and off-road vehicles in new car registrations in Austria is increasing every year. Last year, almost every second new car was an SUV, criticizes the Austrian Transport Club (VCÖ) and refers to data from Statistics Austria. “SUVs have higher energy consumption than comparable conventional models,” says the VCÖ. In Austria, the SUV share of new registrations has more than tripled since 2010 from 13 percent to 45 percent in 2023.

The proportion of SUVs is also high among electric cars. 27 percent of SUVs are electric cars, another 11 percent are plug-in hybrids. “SUVs also have higher consumption with electric cars. The large SUVs also have a larger battery, which worsens the overall environmental balance. And the heavier a car is, the greater the tire wear, which in turn increases the burden of microplastics,” says VCÖ -Expert Lina Mosshammer.

39 percent of SUVs only have a combustion engine and run on diesel or gasoline. With 23,887, most of the higher-slung vehicles were registered in Vienna. The highest proportion of SUVs was in the Styrian district of Liezen at almost 63 percent. Austria’s district with the lowest SUV share last year was Vienna-Ottakring with around 31 percent.

The VCÖ is calling for improved specifications for manufacturers so that more economical models come onto the market.
