Second behind the winner Einer Rubio (Movistar), the Frenchman regretted that Rubio and Jefferson Cepeda (EF Education EasyPost) calculated each pedal stroke while he was generous in the effort. “I do not understand how one can hope to win by running in this way. If I’m not riding, we’re treading water… Cepeda was a big thorn in my side. But whatever happens, I didn’t want him to win, I would have put my guts into it”, he had annoyed in front of the journalists following the arrival.

The Frenchman did not let himself go and reacted with a “Who are you ?”, before… Lance Armstrong comes to meddle in the matter. A former teammate of Vaughters at US Postal, the seven-time fallen Tour de France winner replied to Pinot that the EF boss was just “a fucking clown”.
Relations between the two Americans, who have known each other for a long time, have been strained for years. Jonathan Vaughters is one of those who testified once morest Armstrong to the US Anti-Doping Agency.
