To alleviate the rigors of winter in her badly heated studio, Sofia*, a woman residing in the west of Lausanne, had bought an extra electric heater. The 30-year-old without a profession had assembled the device herself, but without integrating the original metal feet designed to create the safety distance.

From CHUV to HUG

In December 2021, around 10:30 p.m., Sofia was pulled from sleep by flames. The inhabitants of the rental unit fight the fire while waiting for help to arrive and even manage to put it out. Four people are bothered by the smoke. One of them, Sofia, is in a worrying state. She is taken to the CHUV, from where she is then evacuated to the HUG where she would have been plunged into an artificial coma.

From health problems to legal troubles

After the health problems, Sofia had to face legal troubles. Prosecuted for negligent fire, the 30-year-old, whose criminal record was clean until then, was sentenced by criminal order to 30 days-fine of 20 francs with a two-year suspended sentence. Fixed at 1330 francs, the costs of the proceedings were also charged to him.
