Vatican City: Pope Francis’ prayer for the month of March commemorating those martyred for the Christian faith and calling to pray for them. The Pope also asks to pray that the courage of the people who sacrificed their lives for the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world and the zeal of the audience may be an inspiration to the Church. The Vatican released the video of Pope Francis’ prayer mission in March.
The Pope begins his message by recounting an experience he had while visiting a refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesvos. A Muslim who was there as a refugee shared with the Pope the experience of his Christian wife being martyred for her faith. The terrorists who came to the house asked his wife to throw the crucifix on the ground, but she refused to do so. The terrorists killed his wife by slitting her throat in front of him.
The Pope said that this experience is a reflection of what the Church is today and a testimony of faith that goes unrecognized. ‘That man does not hold any grudge once morest anyone. His wife’s example of love had already won him over. This is the testimony of a life that loved Christ, living faithfully unto death’.
The life testimonies of martyrs among us are proof that we are on the right path. There are more martyrs today than there were at the beginning of Christianity. The courage of the martyrs, the testimony of the martyrs, is a blessing to all. The Pope said that we can pray for the Church to be inspired by the courage and zeal of people who sacrifice their lives in different parts of the world for the proclamation of the Gospel.
Akash Basheer (the first servant of God from Pakistan) is also a great example of martyrdom, who sacrificed his life in the suicide attack near St. John’s Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan twenty years ago to save the lives of many.
