Vassilis Spanakis, Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Security, spoke about salary increases of up to 30% in the private sector.
As he characteristically stated on ERT’s First Program, “it was and remains our goal for the salary to reach 1,500 euros at the end of the four years.
Today we find that the average salary is at 1,250 euros and has increased a lot since 2019 and with good forecasts for the coming years. As is known, the average salary in the private sector is around 1,250 euros, depending on the sector. So we have the goal of taking him to 1,500 euros”.
“Aim for unemployment to reach 8% by the end of the four years”
“Today unemployment is at 9.6%. So after two decades, unemployment falls below 10%. That gave us an opportunity—even though we had a commitment as a country when unemployment is for a consecutive year below 10% to unfreeze the three-year freezes and we did that two years early so the three-year freezes were unfrozen and a lot of workers saw raises. in 2024-depending on when the three years will close, with the date that the three years froze, February 14, 2012 (…).
We have the largest drop in unemployment in Europe and the public Employment Service, the OAED, as we know very well, has made special programs in order to deal with unemployment problems in specific groups of our fellow citizens and especially in people who are close to retirement. at ages 55 to 67 (…). Results are not seen overnight. It takes time.
However, from the Ministry of Labor, all the necessary reforms are being carried out with great speed, so that we can talk in reasonable terms and have an additional drop in unemployment and an increase in the average wage and an increase in the minimum wage, as well as an acceleration of the awarding of pensions” added Mr. Spinach.
“They are unfreezing the seniority allowances,” said Mr. Spanakis afterwards, emphasizing the following: “the three-year allowance is, in essence, an allowance that the employee received for his seniority in a job. So this is thawing, after 12 whole years, because the conditions, the economy and the labor market allow it.”
“Wage increases of up to 30% in some sectors”
“There is an analysis depending on the branch and here it also depends on each branch what the specialty is. For example, it is different to be a cook in a hotel and different to be a gardener.
The trend shows that the average salary will increase and we will reach the end of the four years and earlier, in my personal estimation at 1,500 euros (…). It is a fact that wage increases in some sectors, such as tourism and hotels, will reach high percentages.
So, it is a reality and it is mainly due to the lack of staff but also due to the specialization that exists in various professions”, the Deputy Minister of Labor emphasized according to the protothema.
“Our main government goal is for the minimum wage to reach close to one thousand at the end of the four years. Therefore, let’s not forget that in a few weeks, in April or May, we will go to the fourth increase in the minimum wage. Therefore, the increase in the minimum wage will affect the formation of the average wage.
And we are talking about an increase that will take place before the summer. So we will go to a fourth increase in the minimum wage which will be formulated and officially announced before May. An increase in the minimum wage will also affect the average wage. But I also want to welcome the initiative of the businesses that are currently going for wage increases and that really show the need that exists in the labor market” added Mr. Spanakis.
