Vassieux-en-Vercors: a long walkabout for Emmanuel Macron at the end of the ceremony

An hour and a half of official ceremony. An hour and a half of crowd bathing. For this unprecedented tribute to the Vercors maquis, the Head of State will have taken the time to make an impression. At the end of his speech in Vassieux-en-Vercors, he remained to greet the participants well beyond the time announced by the Elysée. Emmanuel Macron was due to leave around 5 p.m. He finally left the village at 6:15 p.m.

The President of the Republic notably posed for a photo with the children of Vassieux who had just listed the names of the 73 civilian victims who appear on the martyrology. And high school students were able to sneak away for selfies with the head of state. Students from the Paul Valéry high school learned from Emmanuel Macron that they might come and visit the Elysée with their class. A teenager from Bourg-de-Péage had confidence, he dared to ask to “do his second year internship at the Elysée” and he managed to slip his business card to the President of the Republic.

The veterans thus exchanged with Emmanuel Macron, thanking him for “honor” that he did to them. A man was able to show the photo of his uncle who died during the Vassieux-en-Vercors massacre. This visit was important for the relatives of the victims of the German assault in the summer of 1944. Only General de Gaulle had made a short stop in Vassieux in 1963. History will record that it was necessary to wait 80 years to that a president spends three hours in the martyr village.
