Variant XBB/Covid-19: “Its contagiousness is very high, we have reinforced screening and vaccination” (DG ANSS)

XBB is the name of the new variant of covid-19, detected in several countries around the world.

To date, this variant remains the most contagious with an extraordinary transmission speed unlike the others previously identified, according to health specialists.

Even if for the moment, Guinea is sheltered from this variant, health measures already enacted by the National Agency for Health Security (ANSS) are being reinforced to prevent the spread. In any case, this is what the director general of the ANSS confided.

“Indeed, there is a new variant of covid-19 called XBB identified in some countries, but for the moment it has not been identified in Guinea. Never mind, we are very vigilant and very attentive, especially since it is a variant that is very contagious. Its contagiousness is very high. So, faced with this new variant and also with the resurgence of COVID in certain countries, we held a crisis meeting at the level of the ANSS with our technical and financial partners, we came to conclusions which were sent to the authorities. including, among other things, the strengthening of the screening test among the general population, we have also focused on travelers, that is to say all the corners of entry into Guinea, we have asked for the intensification of the COVID-19 screening test, which will of course be associated with vaccination. Currently, we are at 32% vaccination coverage, at least 64% of Guineans have received a dose of the anti-COVID-19 vaccine”said Dr Amara Traoré.

As this virus has the same mode of transmission as the others, the Director General of the ANSS invites the population to strictly respect the health measures enacted by the authorities in the context of the fight once morest COVID-19 to prevent them from be contaminated.

“Whatever the variant of COVID-19, it is the same mode of transmission. So to avoid this new variant, all the measures that have been enacted since the beginning of the disease are still valid. Namely: the wearing of masks, social distancing, hand washing and also all measures in general, which make it possible to fight once morest airborne diseases can be applied”, he said during an interview this Tuesday, January 17, 2023
