Varese Hospital Offers New Hope for Parkinson’s Patients

In observance of World Parkinson’s Day, marked annually on November 30th, a crucial initiative has been undertaken by the Neurology department of the Asst dei Sette Laghi Hospital. Led by Director Simone Vidale, the department participated in a seminar highlighting the importance of rehabilitation in managing Parkinson’s disease. The seminar focused on how treatment needs evolve as the disease progresses.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Approach

The seminar emphasized the close connection between medical therapies and rehabilitation for Parkinson’s patients and their caregivers.

This intricately intertwined approach allows for individualized care, addressing a range of needs. These include physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and essential psychological support.

“We aim to shed light on the importance of a comprehensive approach that adjusts to the specific needs of Parkinson’s patients as their condition evolves,” said the seminar markdown,

“This approach encompasses preventive measures and tailored rehabilitation strategies to address the ever-changing requirements throughout the different stages of the disease.”

Breakthrough Continuous Infusion Therapy

“With a focus on significantly improving the lives of Parkinson’s patients, particularly in advanced stages,
we are pleased to announce the implementation of a breakthrough new continuous subcutaneous infusion therapy,” stated Dr. Vidale. “This innovative treatment leads to better management of the disease.

“This therapy delivers levodopa steadily through a non-invasive subcutaneous infusion,” he explained, “resulting in a decrease of motor complications and involuntary movements. It ultimately contributes significantly to restoring personal and social autonomy in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease.”

The Neurology and Stroke Unit at the hospital has already begun administering this therapy to three patients with Parkinson’s disease in advanced stages. Results have shown a marked improvement in their quality of life. The therapy will be offered to other eligible patients in addition to those already receiving treatment.

Patients will continue han receive ongoing care and support from the specialized Movement Disorders clinic, led by neurologist Medical Directors Marco Gallazzi, Cristina Pianezzola, and Clara Lunardon. You can find them at the Community House in Viale Monte Rosa.
