Four basic and municipal schools in the region located in Marcinelle, Couillet and Charleroi-Nord were the target of fires and acts of vandalism during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The small outbreaks were quickly extinguished. “The criminal thesis is proven. We will have to see what the Charleroi public prosecutor’s office says, but it is a case which will be investigated, because it is clearly political”the police zone told the Belga agency this Wednesday morning.
On site, firefighters found protest tags on the interior and exterior walls of certain affected schools with the inscription “NO EVRAS.” Evras, for “Education in Affective and Sexual Relational Life”. This is new for the start of the school year; students in secondary 4, but also primary 6, will have to receive two hours of activities relating to these themes. The decree implementing this measure was unanimously adopted in the Walloon Parliament on Tuesday.
The City of Charleroi, on which the four schools depend, organized a press point at the school Hublinbu de Marcinelle, one of the affected establishments. “These are acts of absolute barbarity. Of terrorism. Everything will be done to arrest the perpetrators”notably launched the mayor of Charleroi Paul Magnette (PS). “We are all knocked out, shocked and angry”continued the PS alderman for education, Julie Patte.
One of the schools is operating normally while the other three are temporarily closed. Daycare centers were organized for parents who might not look following their child. Psychological support was also requested for the teams and the children.
