Last night, the Islanders visited the Vancouver Canucks. The locals won a hotly contested match by a score of 4-3 in overtime and, in doing so, spoiled the return of their former captain to town.
Bo Horvat still scored a goal and received a nice tribute, as I explained earlier this morning.

For the Canucks, it was a 12th victory in 16 games since the start of the season. They are first in the Pacific Division (tied with the Golden Knights, the visitors this evening at the Bell Centre) and second in the entire NHL. Only the Bruins have collected more points than Vancouver since the start of the season.

What’s most surprising regarding all of this is that the top three scorers in the NHL are Canucks players. Forget Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Nathan MacKinnon: the three players with the most points since the start of the 2023-2024 campaign are Quinn Hughes, Elias Pettersson and JT Miller, all three posting a total of 26 points.

Note that Brock Boeser is the NHL’s top scorer (13), tied with Kyle Connor and Auston Matthews.
We didn’t necessarily expect the Canadian team to be among the best at the start of the season, but here it is, and it is formidable. The club has scored 70 goals (in 16 matches). This is obviously good for first place in the NHL and its closest pursuer, the Los Angeles Kings, scored 14 fewer goals (56).
The only real question mark in Vancouver is the contract of star forward Elias Pettersson. The Swede will become a restricted free agent at the end of the season, and the two camps do not appear to be close to an agreement.
The team’s general manager, Patrick Allvin, is on the case, however. He is aware that he and his attacker must find common ground.
