Expected by many players, the famous Dolphin emulator will not finally arrive on Steam. The teams explained in detail the reason for this cancellation, which might have potentially represented the total disappearance of the emulator.

Dolphin, or the promise of finding Nintendo games on PC

To play Nintendo games, it’s very simple, you must have a console from the Japanese giant. Impossible to transgress this rule which may seem perfectly logical, but which nevertheless limits the choice of possibilities. Especially when looking at Nintendo’s catalog of past games. The firm obviously retains control of its licenses and tries to make as many of its old games as possible on the Switch with the online subscription offer, but this still greatly restricts accessibility to games which then become unavailable.

To fight once morest this phenomenon, it is not uncommon to see emulators emerge on PC. This is particularly the case of Dolphin, a reference in the field which makes it easier to access Gamecube and Wii games, with a ton of bonus features. The emulator is available on the official website, but it was to experience a real revival when it arrived in the Steam catalog, the number one platform for PC gamers. Except that unfortunately, this arrival is simply canceled.

Dolphin on Steam, it’s over (definitely)

In terms of intellectual property, as we know, Nintendo is intransigent and categorically refuses to have its licenses manipulated without its authorization. In the case of emulators, it remains more complex since there is a kind of legal vagueness that allows them to survive, under certain conditions. To fight effectively once morest them, Nintendo therefore prefers to attack the sites that distribute/host them and this is more or less what happened in the case of Dolphin, whose Steam page had recently been taken down.

A long press release was shared on the official website of the emulator, revealing the details of the situation and confirming the bad news in passing: Dolphin will not arrive on Steam, that’s for sure. First of all, the Dolphin teams specify that Nintendo did not contact them directly, but that Valve took care of it.

What actually happened is that Valve’s legal department contacted Nintendo to inform them of Dolphin’s release on Steam. In response, an attorney representing Nintendo’s interests demanded that Valve prevent Dolphin from being released on the Steam Store, citing the DMCA. Valve then sent us the statement from Nintendo’s lawyers explaining that we had to reach an agreement with Nintendo to publish (Dolphin) on Steam (…) So, following a long time without giving any news, we have a difficult announcement to make. We are abandoning our efforts to publish Dolphin on Steam. In the end, Valve dictates the rules and can set any condition for the software to appear (on Steam). However, given Nintendo’s position on emulation, Valve’s requirement of obtaining Nintendo’s approval to release Dolphin on Steam is impossible to meet. (…)

Nintendo will never agree to the Dolphin teams, so the emulator will never arrive on Steam. However, the teams still clarified that the future of the emulator did not seem in danger, Nintendo having only asked Valve that the emulator’s Steam page be removed. Finally, features developed specifically for Steam will still arrive in future versions of the emulator. The giant is not crumpled, and Dolphin can continue to exist and improve. All’s well That ends well ?
