The creator of a fan version of Team Fortress 2 on the Source 2 engine using s&box said that Valve has banned its development. The reason for the blocking was copyright violation.
According to the statement, unauthorized transfer and distribution of assets without a license is a violation. Gamers were surprised by Valve’s decision, since the studio was usually loyal to such fan versions of its games. Some users suggested that the company’s ban may be related to its own desire to port Team Fortress 2 to Source 2 in the near future. On the same day, a similar ban affected the fan version of another Valve game, Portal 2.
Team Fortress was released in 2007. Valve is still supporting the game; for example, in 2023, the developers released a large patch, as part of which they added the ability to conduct matches in the 50 vs. 50 format.
