The Valley City State men’s basketball team is set to open the 2023-24 season this week with a pair of home games once morest Brandon University.
VCSU hosts the Bobcats for the season opener Thursday at 7 p.m., and then plays Brandon once more at 3 p.m. Friday. Both games will be played at VCSU’s W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse.
The Vikings will feature a different look Thursday when they take the court with 12 new players on the roster. After graduating 8 seniors from last year’s team, the Vikings have just four returning players from the their 2023-23 squad that went 16-14 overall, 8-6 in conference play and reached the semifinals of the NSAA Tournament.
North Star Athletic Association coaches have picked VCSU to finish fourth in NSAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll released on Monday. The Vikings received 23 poll points and are ranked behind conference favorite Mayville State (45 points), Viterbo University (41 points) and Dickinson State (38 points).
Leading the way for the Vikings this year are returners Cleveland Bedgood, Cayden Rickard and Hunter Lyman. Both Rickard and Lyman were starters for the Vikings last season, while Bedgood played significant minutes off the bench. Also returning this year is sophomore Nick Carlson. They will be joined on the roster by 12 new faces this season, including 9 junior transfers, 2 sophomore transfers and one true freshman.
The Vikings start the season with three home games, including a Nov. 1 women’s and men’s doubleheader with Minnesota-Morris. Following that, the Vikings are on the road for non-conference games once morest Mount Marty, Dakota Wesleyan and Briar Cliff – all teams from the NAIA’s Great Plains Athletic Conference. VCSU’s early-season schedule also includes a Nov. 16 exhibition game at the University of North Dakota.
The NSAA’s 12-game conference schedule begins Jan. 12-13 when the Vikings host Dakota State and Bellevue.
Mayville State tallied five first place votes and 45 points to earn the top spot in the NSAA Men’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Poll.
The Comets swept both the North Star regular-season and postseason tournament titles in 2022-23, finishing with an overall record of 25-6 and 12-2 record in league contests. MSU defeated Dickinson State (N.D.) for the NSAA postseason tournament’s championship game and qualified for the NAIA national tournament, where they fell to Peru State (Neb.) 101-92 in the opening round.
Viterbo (Wis.) was picked to finish second in the preseason poll following picking up a first-place vote and 41 points. The Blue Hawks earned the final first-place vote and registered 38 points to finish third in the poll.
Valley City State (N.D.) was fourth with 23 points, followed by Bellevue (Neb.) fifth with 19 points, Dakota State (S.D.) sixth with 16 points, and Waldorf (Iowa) seventh with 14 points.
Each NSAA member will play a total of 12 conference games, playing six home games and six road games during the conference season. The regular-season finale is set for Feb. 16-17, 2024.
All seven teams will compete in the North Star Athletic Association basketball postseason tournament. This year’s conference tournament will be held at the higher seeds’ campus site in each round, starting with the opening round on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024. The top seed will receive a bye in the opening round and play in the semifinals round which is set for Sunday, Feb. 25, 2024.
The NSAA Men’s Basketball Postseason Tournament is set for Sunday, March 3, 2024, at the highest remaining seed in the tournament.
The NSAA’s tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament’s Opening Round on March 15-16, 2024. The winner of the national tournament’s opening round will move on to the final site in the NAIA National Championships, held in Kansas City, Mo. from March 21-26, 2024.
