Haro on Valentine’s Day: delivery workers for platforms such as Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat have planned to strike in the United Kingdom for the Valentine’s Day, as have workers from the internet giant Amazon, in order to demand better wages and working conditions. On the Instagram account Delivery Jobs UK, which has around 2,000 subscribers, a message calls for the disengagement of couriers for meal or shopping delivery platforms on February 14 between 5 and 10 p.m. GMT, at dinner time.

Meanwhile, the GMB union posted a statement on its website saying strike action will take place at Amazon’s sprawling Coventry site. “Tuesday 13, Wednesday 14 and Thursday 15 February with more than 1000 workers expected to take part”. «These are the first three days of a new wave of social movement following workers voted overwhelmingly in favor of an extension of strikes.following those of last year, continues GMB.

The Amazon strikers are demanding an hourly wage of 15 pounds (17.6 euros). The Delivery Job UK group asks for 5 pounds per trip, compared to around 2.8 and 4 pounds per trip currently, depending on the platforms.

A strategic choice

The strikers want “creating chaos online with people complaining, giving a bad name” to platforms “so as to encourage them to engage in discussions with us”and also to raise awareness among the general public “with unsustainable remuneration” for delivery people, explains Ulisses. The group plans to hold blockades for “peacefully encourage other delivery people to join us”adds Ulisses.

An Uber spokesperson stressed that “the majority of couriers are satisfied with their experience with the (Uber) app and we regularly speak with couriers to find out how to improve their experience”. An Amazon spokesperson said the Coventry strike would have no impact on the service, adding that the group “regularly reviews (its) remuneration to ensure that it is competitive”.
