Valdez Victory 10: Yucatan, 100 quadruples

The Lions’ victory last night in Veracruz was not without drama, with which they closed out the regular season well playing on foreign soil.

Webster Rivas’ double emptied the bases loaded and the melenudos recovered the lead they were losing to defeat Águila 7-3 and win the series at the Deportivo Veracruzano “Beto Ávila”. And with that, the ticket to the postseason is now within reach of a hit for Yucatán.

Gustavo Núñez’s two-run homer brought the Jarochos closer to 4-3 in the eighth inning, in another low for the Yucatán relief team. However, in the ninth inning the Leones went on the attack to win their 27th game on the road, against 16 losses.

The Lions took a significant 4-0 lead before the third out of the game. In the first inning, Luis Felipe Juárez hit a two-run homer to cap a four-run streak, off David Reyes, who always shines against the beasts. It was the 100th home run for the beasts in the regular season.

And with that early cushion, César Valdez pitched with enough calm for six innings, in which he allowed four hits, on his way to his tenth victory of the calendar. “La Cabra” tied in games won with Trevor Bauer, star of the Diablos Rojos, announced to start last night in a game that was canceled due to rain.

Yucatan has set its record at 44-35 and is below Querétaro, which has 47-35, and the Conspirators are a game and a half ahead in second place in the South Zone. There are six games left to play and with that, Querétaro and Yucatan are practically tied for the playoff party.— Gaspar Silveira
