Valais Apricot Harvest: Quality Ensured Despite Rainy Spring- 2023 Update

In Valais, the apricot harvest promises to be scarce this year due in particular to a rainy spring. But the quality of the fruit will be there, according to the Interprofession des Fruits et Légumes du Valais (IFELV).

‘With an expected volume of 5,400 tonnes, the 2023 harvest is below the average for the last ten years, which amounts to 7,700 tonnes’, details Wednesday the secretary general of IFELV Olivier Borgeat in a press release. ‘However, we remain positive since the quality of the apricots looks good,’ he adds.

After a record year in 2022, the weather conditions were not as kind in 2023. The rainy climate this spring slowed pollination and favored diseases such as flower moniliosis, particularly affecting organic apricot producers, specifies the IFELV. The orchards also suffered winter frost in January which followed the mild temperatures of December.

In total, the Valais cultivates 95% of Swiss apricot production on 691 hectares. Organic areas have increased slightly this year to reach 87 hectares, or 13% of the total area.
