Vaccine pass: how a tweet from the Republican boss in the Senate derailed the agreement

Senators and deputies were regarding to agree, this Thursday, January 14, on the contours of the future vaccine pass. But a tweet from the head of the LR in the Senate, Bruno Retailleau, broke the secrecy of the exchanges and put an end to the negotiations.

When Twitter intrudes into the mysteries of the Senate, nothing works. While deputies and senators were on the verge of reaching an agreement on the bill establishing the vaccination pass, a tweet from the boss of LR in the Senate called everything into question.

A tweet that stops the discussions

It all started well though. In the night from Wednesday to Thursday, the senators vote a text substantially identical to the bill transmitted by the National Assembly. Then comes the time for the final negotiations on the contours of the future vaccine pass. Discussions taking place in a joint committee, behind closed doors.

But now when deputies and senators seemed to have agreed, Bruno Retailleau drew his phone. At 5:45 am this Thursday, January 13, he tweets: “The CMP (Joint committee, editor’s note) on the vaccine pass has given reason to the Senate, it is the victory of the good sense. The pass is intended to protect the French and nothing else … no offense to Emmanuel Macron “.

The CMP on the #passevaccinal gave reason to #Senate, it is the victory of common sense. Senators have obtained many clarifications and simplifications. The pass is intended to protect the French and nothing else … no offense to Emmanuel Macron

A reaction which broke the secrecy of the debates and did not at all to the deputies of the majority. End of discussions. “The senatorial majority tramples our institutions and causes the failure of the commission. The electoral context does not justify everything”, replied the President of the Laws Commission Yaël Braun-Pivet (LREM). Discussions are expected to resume this Friday.

After delaying tactics and attempts to empty the text of its substance, the senatorial majority tramples on our institutions and causes the failure of the CMP. The electoral context does not justify everything. We remain mobilized and resume the text in @AN_ComLois at 10 p.m. #DirectAN pic.twitter.com/L7gdq4S89V
