Protecting the Youngest
In June 2024, vaccination against rotavirus was introduced for babies born from January onward. this program, targeting children under three months old, will immunize approximately 14,000 infants annually. The initiative is expected to drastically reduce hospital admissions for this cause, with projections indicating a 90% decrease. Prior to its inclusion in the public health program, 70% of families opted for private vaccination, incurring a cost of €200 per child. Furthermore, in late September 2024, a campaign was launched to immunize newborns against the respiratory syncytial virus, the primary culprit behind bronchiolitis. The goal was to ensure all babies leaving regional maternity hospitals were protected. As of the latest coverage data, over 3,200 babies, representing 94% of newborns, have received this immunization.Expanding Protection to Adults
To address adult health, the Murcia region has expanded shingles vaccination to include 80-year-olds, reinforcing protection against this viral infection. In another significant move, the HPV vaccine has been extended to men up to the age of 25.Previously, this protection was limited to those born after 2011. This expansion aims to benefit over 128,000 individuals who would have otherwise faced a cost of over €170 for private immunization. HPV vaccination for women continues to be offered at age 12 in schools, with catch-up vaccinations available for those who missed their initial dose up to the age of 18. The extension to men up to 25 years old will also allow older women who were not previously vaccinated to receive this protection.Prioritizing School-Based Vaccinations
Recognizing the convenience for families, Murcia’s health authorities have continued to prioritize school-based vaccination programs. “The Region has extensive experiance in school vaccination, which makes it easier for families to have their children immunized without having to travel to a health center,” said Juan José Pedreño, the health advisor. For the 2024-2025 academic year, influenza vaccination has been expanded to encompass all of Early Childhood Education, including children over two years old. At present, almost 49% of children aged 6 months to 5 years have been vaccinated against the flu.## Murcia Strengthens Defense Against COVID-19 with Expanded vaccination Program
