Bregenz (VLK) – After the recent outbreak of measles in the neighboring state of Tyrol, there is now also a confirmed case in Vorarlberg. State Health Councilor Martina Rüscher and the Vorarlberg State Medical Directorate therefore recommend vaccination once more. The recommendation is aimed at all people who were not vaccinated once morest measles twice in their childhood or who did not have the disease safely. “Measles is not a harmless ‘children’s disease’; adults can also become ill. Vaccination is the safest precaution, it provides reliable protection and is free,” appeals Rüscher.
More than 100 measles cases have already been reported across Austria in the still young year of 2024, most of them in Lower Austria (40), Vienna (27) and Tyrol (23) and now also one in Vorarlberg. Measles is highly contagious and can lead to serious complications – in extreme cases, life-threatening encephalitis. “It is all the more important to achieve the highest possible vaccination rate in the population,” emphasizes State Councilor Rüscher.
The triple combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccination is free not only for children as part of the child vaccination program, but also for all adults in Austria. Even those who are (still) protected once morest some or all of these diseases can still get vaccinated once more – “over-vaccination” is not possible.
