The vaccination campaign against flu and COVID-19 without an appointment in the health centers that have been set up in the Balearic Islands – seven in Mallorca, two in Menorca, seven in Ibiza and one in Formentera – begins this Monday, 4 November.
In a press release, the Ministry of Health has reported that this Monday the vaccination campaign against flu and COVID-19 for the 2024-2025 season opens without an appointment in the health centers enabled on the four islands. The main objective of this campaign is to improve coverage levels in all risk groups that were registered in previous campaigns.
In Mallorca, people who want to be immunized against the seasonal virus can go starting this Monday without an appointment to the following centers: CS Escuela Graduada (Palma), CS S’Escorxador (Palma), CS Son Pisà (Palma), CS Es Blanquer (Inca), CS Manacor, CS Santa Ponça and CS Trencators (S’Arenal de Llucmajor) from Monday to Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
In Menorca, you can go to the Mateu Orfila General Hospital – Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. – and to the CS Canal Salat (Ciutadella), from Monday to Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
In Ibiza, you can go to the Hospital Can Misses – on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. -, CS Can Misses, CS San Josep de sa Talaia and CS Sant Joan de Labritja – from Monday to Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. – and CS Es Viver, CS Vila and CS Santa Eulària des Riu –Monday to Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. And, in Formentera, at the CS Formentera – Monday to Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

TARGET POPULATION
The vaccination campaign is aimed at all people over 60 years of age and those under that age who have any of the established risk conditions. In total, this target population in the Balearic Islands is made up of some 606,685 people in the case of flu – 486,040 in Mallorca, 47,434 in Menorca and 77,204 in Ibiza and Formentera – and 458,323 people in the case of COVID-19 – 366,549. Mallorca, 36,877 in Menorca and 54,897 in Ibiza and Formentera–.
Vaccination is recommended for people 60 years of age or older; people over 65 years of age admitted to nursing homes, centers for the disabled or admitted to closed institutions; and people, from the age of 12, who suffer from a risk condition such as diabetes, morbid obesity, chronic cardiovascular, neurological or respiratory diseases, kidney or liver diseases, including alcoholism, serious neuromuscular diseases, immunosuppressed people, including those who have the immune system weakened by the AIDS virus (HIV) or by drugs, as well as transplant recipients, celiac patients, people diagnosed with cancer, with chronic inflammatory diseases, and those who suffer from disorders or diseases that involve cognitive dysfunction, such as syndrome Down syndrome or dementia.
Vaccination is also recommended for pregnant women at any time during pregnancy and up to six months after delivery; people who live with others who have a high degree of immunosuppression (transplant recipients, people with chronic kidney failure or people infected with HIV); smokers; staff from health and social health centers, both public and private, as well as students who are doing internships; workers of essential public services, such as State security forces and bodies, both national and local, firefighters and civil protection services; daycare and early childhood education center professionals; and people who work on poultry, swine, mink or wildlife farms or operations, in order to avoid cross-contamination of human and animal viruses.
As a novelty, this year the pilot plan has begun in schools, as well as universal vaccination of children between six and 59 months of age (four years and 11 months).
The reason for universal immunization of this group, which was already implemented during the last flu campaign, is that children of this age frequently suffer from the flu and, often, very seriously. In addition, they are usually the main transmitters of the influenza virus to other target groups. This not only provides individual protection to the minor, but also vulnerable people around them are protected from contagion.
The vaccination schedule for these healthy children is a single dose. The youngest children, from six months to two years old, will be administered an inactivated injectable vaccine. The rest of the children in the age group, from two years to four years and 11 months, will be inoculated with an intranasal flu vaccine.
VACCINATION AGAINST COVID-19
As in previous anti-flu campaigns, since COVID-19 broke out, in centers dependent on the Health Service, people for whom it is indicated will be offered the possibility of administering both vaccines, against flu and against COVID. -19.
Double vaccination is also offered to the entire population with risk conditions from 12 years of age, to pregnant women, to those living with people with a high degree of immunosuppression or to the elderly with higher risk diseases, to essential services personnel. and workers in health or social health centers, with the sole exception of students in training, for whom flu vaccination is only recommended.
Finally, children between six months and 12 years old who present any of the following situations – as well as the people they live with – are also urged to be vaccinated against COVID-19: transplanted from hematopoietic parents; primary and acquired immunodeficiencies or being treated with immunosuppressants, and those who suffer from severe chronic cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological or neuromuscular diseases.
