V. Zelensky: D. Trump is on V. Putin’s side regarding aid to Ukraine

The Ukrainian leader spoke to CNN in his latest interview with US television, at a time when President Joe Biden is struggling to break a deadlock in Congress, where members of Trump’s Republican Party in the House of Representatives are opposing authorization to grant $61 billion. dollars (56.21 billion euros) of new support to Ukraine.

According to excerpts of the interview released Monday, Zelensky said he “can’t understand how Donald Trump can be on Putin’s side,” adding that it was “unbelievable.”

Noting that D. Trump, the Republican favorite to challenge Mr. Biden in the November elections, had met with the Russian president during his term, V. Zelensky said he did not think that D. Trump understood V. Putin.

“I think that Donald Trump does not know Putin,” said V. Zelensky. “I don’t think he understands that Putin will never stop.”

Trump has called US support a waste of money and sought to link the Ukraine debate with Biden’s policies on migrants trying to cross the Mexican border during the election campaign.

James David Vance, a Republican senator who supports Trump, told the Munich Security Conference this month that US aid “will not fundamentally change the reality on the battlefield.”

Zelensky invited JDVance to visit the front lines, saying “he will understand that millions of people will be killed” without new US support.

Russia recently scored its first victory in months in Ukraine, capturing Avdiyivka in the eastern Donetsk region, and Ukrainian troops are speaking of severe ammunition shortages.
