Although it has recently been trumpeted that Ukraine’s counteroffensive has not lived up to expectations, but according to security expert Rainer Sachs, it cannot be ignored that Ukrainian forces have achieved important achievements.
In his view, Ukraine fell into a small trap because of a cleverly crafted media campaign in the spring that raised expectations about the scale of the expected counterattack and its likely success.
The security expert admitted that no major changes can be recorded on the front line of Ukraine, but progress has indeed been made in some areas, reports the Estonian news agency ERR.
“But they still made some progress.” In particular, they managed to push the Russian Black Sea Fleet closer to the eastern coast of the Black Sea, which actually gave Ukraine a lot of freedom. The Black Sea Fleet is undoubtedly important, especially for air strikes.
In addition, Ukraine has also achieved that grain is now being exported from Ukrainian ports, which is hard to imagine without the deterrence of this fleet. Exports have not reached the level they were in peacetime, but it is working, and this is really a great achievement for Ukraine,” he added.
According to R.Saks, Ukraine failed to push the Russian air force far enough, which is one of the main reasons why the counterattack is considered a disappointment.
“Ukraine hoped that they would be able to inflict such heavy losses on the Russian army that they would be forced to retreat. And now, from the perspective of time, it is explained that air superiority was not achieved. Russia is currently not using planes to attack Ukrainian cities because it is too dangerous. Russia lost many planes during the war and does not want to lose any more. However, in order to advance, the enemy’s air force must be pushed further. Ukraine could not do this with the weapons it had. This is considered one of the most serious reasons,” explained the expert.
In his opinion, there were also minor tactical mistakes by Ukraine. One of the main problems, however, was that Kyiv did not receive as many supplies as quickly as it had hoped.
“We have seen Ukraine conduct a drone campaign against Russia, which has been partially successful, but Ukraine has not been able to launch a large-scale drone attack. Either they weren’t able to build them in such large numbers, or they weren’t able to carry out these attacks for other reasons. So there were a lot of failures,” noted R. Saksas.
The expert believes that last summer, the Ukrainians also failed to take advantage of the moments when the Russian army was crushed and then was forced to retreat several times.
“It was at that time that these supplies were actually supposed to be sent to Ukraine.” Maybe then the impact would have been a bit bigger. However, it will not be possible to break Russia with a campaign lasting just a few months, it is obvious that more forces are needed,” he emphasized.
