The Ukrainian presidency said that V. Zelensky was “on his way to Argentina to participate in the inauguration of the newly elected president Javier Milei”, which will take place on Sunday.
A political recluse, Mr. Milei vowed to destroy Argentina’s political establishment and swept into elections in late November.
V. Zelenskiy congratulated him, and soon after the election of J. Milei, the two leaders spoke on the phone.
V. Zelensky then thanked Mr. Mile for his clear support for Ukraine.
“Ukrainians notice and appreciate it well,” V. Zelenskiy said on the X social network.
After the conversation, Mr. Milei’s office released a statement saying that he “proposed Argentina to host a Ukraine-Latin America summit.”
Russia’s ambassador to Argentina Dmitry Feoktistov will take part in the ceremony, Russian state news agencies reported.
The Kremlin “noted several statements that Javier Milei made during the election campaign,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“However, we will focus and judge him based on the statements he will make after the inauguration,” Peskov added.
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Milei on his victory, according to a Kremlin statement.
Many other foreign leaders will attend the inauguration.
King Felipe VI of Spain, Prime Minister of Hungary Viktor Orbán, President of Paraguay Santiago Pena, President of Uruguay Luis Lacalle Pou and President of Chile Gabriel Boric are scheduled to attend.
