“Denmark and Lithuania share the same values, interests and approach to European security and defence. I would like to emphasize Denmark’s continuous and significant contribution to the NATO air police mission in the Baltic countries, in which Danish soldiers have already participated eight times,” said Deputy Minister Greta Monika Tučkutė during the ceremony.
As announced in the ministry’s announcement, in gratitude for the service rendered, the retired colonel Niels Henrik Johansen was awarded the “For Merit” medal of the Lithuanian National Defense System.
V. Salomonsens started serving in the Danish army in 1993. After participating in the mission in Iraq, the sea captain was awarded many awards, including the Knight Order of Dannebrog.
According to KAM, Denmark and Lithuania are even members of several multilateral cooperation formats, such as the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), North-Baltic States (NB8) and the Northen Group, North-Baltic-USA (NBUS).
The Danish officer heads the NATO Force Integration Unit established in Lithuania in 2015, which is responsible for receiving NATO’s special rapid reaction forces in Lithuania.
Denmark has expressed its intention to join the demining coalition led by Lithuania, and in August of this year it joined the Cyber Rapid Response Force project coordinated by Lithuania. The cooperation between the countries in providing support to Ukraine is also flexible.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Denmark has provided consistent political and practical support to Lithuania since the beginning of the formation of the Lithuanian army. Denmark was also Lithuania’s first partner in international operations: in 1994-1996, Lithuanian soldiers participated in the first international operation in Croatia, where about 90 Lithuanian soldiers served in the Danish battalion. Denmark also cooperated during missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
