V. Rupšys: The deployment of the German brigade in Lithuania is a very complicated operation

“This is a very complex operation, the transfer or deployment of a German brigade to Lithuania for a permanent presence, it is a very complex operation, a complex task, it includes not only the transfer of military capabilities, but also many other areas – infrastructure, social, educational, medical – probably would not be possible today to list,” V. Rupšys told reporters in Vilnius on Friday.

He also added that the planning and coordination for the deployment of the brigade at the political and military level is very smooth.

“Practically, the brigade transferred here will have to live in the same environment and use the same guarantees and services as we, the residents of Lithuania, have. It must be understood that even planning cannot take place very soon,” said the army commander.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said this week that Lithuania will have to prepare not only military, but also so-called social infrastructure, such as schools and leisure spaces, for the planned deployment of the country’s brigade.

According to him, a specific plan for the brigade, consisting of approximately 4 thousand troops, deployment and installation of infrastructure, Germany will prepare with Lithuania by the end of this year.

Soldiers will be deployed in Lithuania for three-year rotations, which means that many of them will come to the country with their families.

In June of this year, Berlin announced that it would permanently deploy a brigade of soldiers in Lithuania, once Lithuania has installed a permanent infrastructure. It is promised to be done by 2026.
