TASHKENT, May 9 (Xinhua) — Uzbekistan will hold snap presidential elections on July 9 after adopting a new constitution, a presidential decree announced on Monday.

Addressing the parliament, government as well as other state bodies earlier on Monday, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev said the new constitution sets new urgent political, social and economic tasks.

Under the new constitution, the presidential election must take into account that “all branches of power are being reformed”, the president noted.

The April 30 referendum approved a set of constitutional amendments, including extending the presidential term from five to seven years.

Mr Mirziyoyev, who won back-to-back presidential elections in 2016 and 2021, can now run for two seven-year terms under the new Constitution.

“In the current situation, when extreme and complex developments are taking place in the world and in the region, the most urgent and important issue is the search and implementation of the correct and effective development path,” Mr. Mirziyoyev said. END
