When assessing people who apply for disability benefits (WIA), the UWV only needs to look at how much they currently earn. The estimate of how much a person might still earn is temporarily canceled.
This is the decision taken by outgoing Minister of Social Affairs Karien van Gennip. The relaxation of the assessment should help to clear the large backlogs in socio-medical assessments of the UWV more quickly.
Now the UWV must look at workers with disabilities to see how much they currently earn and estimate how much they are able to earn. The outcome of this determines whether someone receives a benefit and how high it should be.
By only looking at what someone actually earns and omitting the theoretical assessment, two to three thousand additional assessments can be carried out per year, according to the Ministry of Social Affairs. The UWV emphasizes that the new measure only applies to those who are still partially working.
In the past two years, the assessment method for people over 60 for WIA benefits has also been relaxed. This means that the queue for assessments at the UWV will have shrunk slightly in the first half of 2023.
The intention is that this measure will come into effect on July 1 next year and remain in force for three years. Stakeholders can still share their position on this before the proposal is submitted to the House of Representatives and the Council of State.
