LARAMIE – Jay Sawvel will be hiring two new coordinators.

Wyoming’s defensive coordinator, who will replace retiring head coach Craig Bohl following the Arizona Bowl, is also in the market for an offensive coordinator.

Tim Polasek is leaving the program to become the next head coach at North Dakota State, a UW source confirmed to the Star-Tribune.

ESPN was the first to report the move.

Polasek has been the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator since the 2021 season.

UW ranks 75th in scoring (26.1 ppg), 66th in rushing (157.5 ypg), 120th in passing (167.3 ypg) and 109th in total yards (324.8 ypg) out of 133 FBS teams.

“It’s not regarding the scheme, it’s not regarding the structure, it’s not regarding anything else (but) explosive players make explosive plays,” Sawvel said during the press conference introducing him as UW’s next head coach when asked regarding his offensive philosophy. “So, one thing we’ve got to do is make sure we get explosive players the ball. We’ve got to recruit and attain and retain explosive players. And then we’ve got to make it to where those guys can play really fast.”

Bohl hired Polasek, who was the Iowa offensive line coach, following Brent Vigen left to become Montana State’s head coach following the 2020 season.

Polasek previously coached under Bohl, who won three FCS national championships at NDSU, in Fargo from 2006-12.

Matt Entz, who led NDSU to a win over Vugen and Montana State in this year’s playoffs before Saturday night’s loss at Montana in the semifinals, is leaving to become an assistant at USC.

Polasek was also UW’s quarterbacks coach this season.

Andrew Peasley had the second-best passer rating (147.36) in the Mountain West following completing 60.6% of his passes for 1,823 yards with 20 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Sawvel will inherit a talented quarterback in Evan Svoboda, who made his first career start at Texas when Peasley was injured and showed flashes of brilliance during spot action throughout the season.

It is still unclear whether Polasek will be calling the plays during the Pokes’ game once morest Toledo on Dec. 30 in Tucson, Arizona, or if he is leaving to begin his new job at NDSU.
