New Delhi: Dramatic political moves in Uttar Pradesh as elections to 10 Rajya Sabha seats in the state are to be held today. In a major blow to the Samajwadi Party, the party’s Chief Whip in the Legislative Assembly resigned. Manoj Kumar Pandey, also an MLA from Unjahar, resigned. The Chief Whip himself resigned amid rumors that some of the Samajwadi Party MLAs would defect to the BJP. Eight MLAs were absent from the pre-election dinner organized by Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh Yadav has come forward with allegations that the BJP is putting pressure on the MLAs of the Samajwadi Party. Yesterday, Akhilesh lashed out once morest the BJP in strong language and claimed that BJP’s machinations are worthless. “This is their style. They instill fear in people. They are threatened. Investigating agencies are being used and old cases are being prosecuted. Akhilesh said yesterday that no such tactics are worth it in this election.

Meanwhile, Akhilesh was in a state of loss of confidence while reacting today. “We hope that all the three candidates of the Samajwadi Party will win. BJP can use any strategy to win elections. They know they will do anything to win. Some of our leaders who aim for personal gains may go to BJP’ – said Akhilesh.

A tough race is being prepared for the Rajya Sabha amid fears that Congress and Samajwadi MLAs will cross-vote. Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, BJP President JP Nadda. Ashok Chavan, including Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnav and L Murugan, had elected 41 representatives for 56 seats unopposed.

BJP has fielded eight candidates in Uttar Pradesh. All three Samajwadi Party. If the MLAs of both the parties cast their votes as expected, the BJP will be able to send seven members and the Samajwadi Party two members each unopposed.

Former union minister RPN Singh, former MP Chaudhary Tejvir Singh, senior state leader Amarpal Maurya, former minister Sangita Balawant, party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi, former MLA Sadhana Singh and former Agra mayor Naveen Jain have been fielded by the BJP for the contest. Apart from this, BJP has fielded Sanjay Seth as the eighth candidate, and there is a strong competition in one seat. Actress Jaya Bachchan, retired IAS officer Alok Ranjan and Dalit leader Lal Suman are the candidates of the Samajwadi Party.

The BJP is expecting to secure the eighth seat through cross-voting from the Samajwadi Party camp. The BJP had claimed that 10 SP MLAs were in close contact with them.
