The UTEP women’s basketball team signed Czech forward Luisa Vydrova, coach Keitha Adams announced. Vydrova will defend the colors of the Czech Republic at the FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup, to be played this summer.

Vydrova joins Mariama Sow, out of New Mexico Junior College, and Ivane Tensaie, a transfer from Penn State, who also signed with the Miners in recent days.

“Luisa is a very good basketball player who has a sense of the game. She is a hard working striker with a good skill set. Luisa brings international experience playing for the Czech Republic National Team. She has good hands around the basket and plays with a certain amount of poise,” Adams said.

Vidrova plays for Chance Under-19 in the Czech Women’s Basketball League, as well as the Czech Youth National Team. She averaged 14.5 points along with 6.3 rebounds during the 2022-23 season and shot 86.7 percent from the free throw line.

Mariama helped NMJC to a record of 52 wins and 11 losses over two seasons.

“Mariama is a very tall athlete. She is an active rebounder, she can score around the basket and is very mobile in transition. Mariama will also have a great defensive presence for us with her size and her athletic ability,” noted Coach Adams.

Tensaie saw action in eight games with Penn State as a sophomore and received multiple accolades in his rookie season at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS).

“We are excited regarding Ivane’s arrival at UTEP. He is a guard who plays with a lot of serenity. He can shoot the ball, distribute it and brings leadership qualities. We will look for her to be a complete player who does many things for her team, which sometimes go unnoticed but which is especially important. She will be great at communicating on the court with her teammates and doing the little things that she needs from her guard position,” Adams commented.
