Norway, Greece, Turkey – the “USS Gerald R. Ford” recently took part in NATO exercises in Europe. As the floating colossus made its way to European waters months ago, the US Navy’s Greg Huffman said, “Our presence at sea during the deployment will provide our allies and partners with reassurance that sea lanes remain open and our joint operations will demonstrate our commitment to maritime stability.”
In September, the largest warship in the world is now heading for Italy. As the President of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Massimiliano Fedriga, recently announced on Facebook, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will call at the port of Trieste on September 17th. Only last year an American aircraft carrier anchored there. The “USS Harry S. Truman” had to remain in European waters longer than planned because of the Ukraine war.
The “USS Gerald R. Ford” is considered the most modern aircraft carrier in the world. The 337 meter long ship is named following the 38th President of the USA and offers space for 75 fighter jets and 4500 people. It entered service in 2017. The $13 billion aircraft carrier has repeatedly struggled with technical problems.
According to Fedriga, the giant warship is expected to remain in the Gulf of Trieste until September 21.
