The US Ohio-class nuclear submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) paid a visit to Tromsø, Norway. The guided missile submarine arrived in Scandinavia on September 14, 2023.

What we know

By sending a nuclear-powered submarine to Norway, the United States will strengthen its partnership with the Scandinavian country. For the guided-missile cruiser USS Florida (SSGN 728), which is no longer a nuclear aircraft carrier, this is the first visit to Norway. The submarine went to Italy at the end of the summer.

The USS Florida is the sixth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the state of Florida. The nuclear-powered submarine joined the United States Navy in 1983 as a carrier of nuclear-tipped Trident II (D5) intercontinental ballistic missiles and was designated SSBN 728.

Twenty years following commissioning, the USS Florida was refueled and converted into a cruise missile submarine. The procedure lasted approximately three years, following which the ship was designated SSGN 728.

The USS Florida (SSGN 728) is now a Tomahawk missile carrier. The Ohio-class nuclear-powered submarine can carry up to 154 cruise missiles. The Ohio-class submarine is also armed with 533mm torpedoes.
