That’s what it’s regarding
A US warship shot down several drones in the Red Sea on Sunday.
Several merchant ships suffered minor damage from rocket fire.
The USA speaks of a direct threat to global trade and maritime security.
In a series of attacks, the US guided missile destroyer Carney shot down several drones in the Red Sea on Sunday, according to the US regional command Centcom.
At 9:15 a.m. local time, the Carney discovered an anti-ship ballistic missile in the south of the Red Sea that was fired from areas controlled by the Houthi rebels in Yemen and was aimed at the Unity Explorer. The Bahamas-flagged bulk carrier is British-owned. The missile struck near the ship, which is crewed by sailors from two nations, according to Centcom.
Houthi drone is said to have targeted US ship
At around 12 p.m., the Carney shot down a drone in international waters that had taken off from Houthi-controlled areas and was heading toward the warship. The US military cannot confirm whether the USS Carney was the primary target of the drone.
In another incident at around 12:35 p.m., the Unity Explorer reported that it was hit by a missile that came from Houthi-controlled areas. Carney responded to the emergency call and while assessing the damage discovered another drone, which was then rendered harmless. The Unity is said to have suffered minor damage from the rocket.
At around 3:30 p.m., a missile fired from Yemen hit the Number 9, a Panamanian-flagged, British-owned bulk carrier in international waters. The ship was damaged, but no one was injured.
At around 4:30 p.m., the Sophie II, a Panama-flagged ship with a crew from eight countries, issued a distress call following being hit by a missile, which did not cause serious damage. During the inspection, the USS Carney also intercepted another drone.
“Completely made possible by Iran”
The US Regional Command speaks of a “direct threat to international trade and maritime security. “You have endangered the lives of international crews from several countries around the world.” The US also assumes that the attacks carried out by the Houthi rebels were made possible entirely by Iran – it is not known whether the Shahed drones developed by Iran were used in the attacks. “All appropriate measures” will now be considered in consultation with the allies.
