The arrival of USS Annapolis to Jeju Island is to restock supplies, according to South Korean Navy spokesman Jang Do-yeong. The submarine visit comes amid recent North Korean weapons tests and the recent departure of the USS Kentucky, which possesses nuclear missile capabilities.

South Korean and US defense authorities are currently engaged in discussions regarding a possible joint naval exercise during the visit of the USS Annapolis.

Such an exercise would serve as a demonstration of military cooperation between the two countries amid regional tensions.

The arrival of the USS Annapolis comes just days before the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, a major occasion celebrated in North Korea with a military parade in the capital Pyongyang.

North Korea’s Rodong newspaper emphasized the importance of strengthening military power for self-defense, according to the EFE news agency.

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have escalated since the failure of denuclearization talks in 2019. North Korea rejected offers for dialogue and conducted extensive missile tests, while South Korea and the United States resumed joint exercises and deployed strategic assets in the region.
