Scientists from the Bone Research Lab, linked to the Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto at the University of São Paulo (FORP-USP), are exploring the potential of stem cells in the bone regeneration process. Collaborating with researchers from the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Vermont, the study receives support from the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation, FAPESP.

Starting tests with mesenchymal stem cells, which have been widely studied, the initial results were unsatisfactory. The scientists then chose to modify the DNA of these cells, inducing the expression of different proteins, including BMP-9, associated with bone formation.

In experiments with rats, whose skull bones were fractured, modified stem cells demonstrated significant improvement in the regeneration process compared to unmodified ones. The presence of the BMP-9 protein proved to be crucial in the effectiveness of bone repair.

Despite the notable advances, scientists emphasize the need for further investigations before moving towards clinical trials with patients. The researcher responsible for the project, Adalberto Luiz Rosa, emphasizes the importance of improving the entire process to achieve complete bone regeneration.

The next step of the research involves exploring the possibility of isolating specific components with greater osteogenic potential, aiming for their application in the treatment of bone fractures.
