USGS: 7.1 earthquake hits Indonesia

There were no reports of damage or casualties.

According to the USGS, the earthquake that occurred at 11 a.m. 53 min. local (6:53 a.m. Lithuanian) time, no tsunami warning was issued.

According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), a moderate tremor was felt in Saumlaki in the Tanimbar Islands.

“The earthquake was quite strong. But people don’t panic here. We are used to earthquakes,” Lambert Tatang, a resident of Saumlakis, told the AFP news agency.

“Especially after we learned that there is no danger of a tsunami, so now life is normal,” the 41-year-old added.

Indonesia experiences frequent seismic and volcanic activity due to its location on the Pacific Ocean’s “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates collide.

In November last year, a 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck West Java province, killing 602 people.

Most of the victims of this earthquake were killed by the collapse of buildings or landslides caused by it.

On December 26, 2004, a strong earthquake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami in the Indian Ocean that killed more than 230,000 people, as well as further afield in Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand.

This powerful 9.1-magnitude earthquake caused waves about 30 meters high that reached the coast of Banda Aceh in Sumatra.
