Users report failures with iPhone alarms starting with iOS 17

If there’s anything more frustrating than losing time, it’s being betrayed by something that should theoretically help you wake up — a situation that has been faced by some iPhone owners in recent days. According to reports published in online forums, some devices are simply ignoring registered alarms.

Everything indicates that the affected devices are running some version of iOS 17, officially released by Apple in September. A Reddit user, for example, opened a topic reporting that he had registered a sequence of alarms on his iPhone 15, but that only one of them actually went off as expected.

I discovered that all of my previous alarms remained “set” but failed to go off. None of these alarms are recurring, so they should not “reset” themselves after being stopped. I also didn’t hit snooze on any of the first alarms.

The publication in question has almost 3,000 positive reviews at the time this article is written. Several users responded to report that they were experiencing the same problem. One of them, for example, had to explain to his boss what had happened because he probably missed working hours.

Apparently, there is no exact pattern for how the problem happens. While in the case of the main report the alarms are apparently ignored by the system, many other users report that it even runs and is displayed in the iOS interface, but the iPhone does not play any sound — which makes it, most of the time, useless.

Apple has not yet officially commented on the problem, while the solutions presented to remedy it range from disabling Standby mode (StandBy), including choosing a default alarm sound instead of a custom one, or even disabling the Require Attention option for Face ID.
