Users of Method 3D printers can now also use Cura

UltiMaker has added the Method X and Method XL to the print profiles in the beta version of Cura 5.6. This means that the integration of the merged company has gone one step further. Users of the Method 3D printers can now count on the same user experience as those who print with the UltiMaker S.

Last year, the Dutch Ultimaker and the former Stratasys subsidiary Makerbot merged to form UltiMaker. However, those who printed with one of Makerbot’s Method 3D printers might not yet benefit from all the setting options of Cura. That is now possible.

Different file type

In a blog post, UltiMaker states that the main reason this has taken a year is because the Method printers use a different file type than the S series printers. They work with .makerbot files. Cura had to be adapted accordingly.

Also new material profiles

In the latest Cura 5.6 beta release you will find new print profiles for the Method and Method XL 3D printers, as well as new material profiles for ABS-R, ABS-CF (Carbon Fiber) and RapidRinse. These profiles are just as professionally tuned and extensively tested as the profiles for the S series 3D printers and materials, so that Method users get the same experience. In total you get access to more than 600 settings in Cura for complete flexibility when 3D printing.

CloudPrint remains accessible

The Method 3D printers have been developed from the start for 3D printing of end parts, tooling and prototyping. The XL version distinguishes itself not only with the construction volume (305 by 305 by 320 mm) but also with the heated construction chamber (up to 100 degrees C) and heated construction plate. This avoids the risk of warping or poor layer adhesion. The two Method models continue to work with CloudPrint for build job preparation and remote management of the 3D printers. So there is no need to switch. Those who do not have access to the cloud or do not want it can install the new Cura release locally and work with it.

UltiMaker announces that it will release more updates for the two printer models in the near future. More material profiles will be added and the 3D printers will become compatible with UltiMaker Digital Factory.
