The number of used car registrations in Belgium increased by 8.4% in January compared to the same month of the previous year to reach 61,908 units. This was announced by the Traxio mobility federation on Friday.

Traxio describes this growth as “amazing, following an already successful 2023”. “It appears that the used car market is constantly improving and will maintain a high level in the years to come.” According to the federation, the used car market continues to evolve favorably due to several key factors such as their more affordable price, which is even experiencing a slight decline at the start of the year. Gasoline engines continue to represent 54%, while the share of used diesel vehicles continues to decline to 32.7%.

In addition, the total number of registrations (i.e. all categories combined, not just consumers) of new electric cars increased significantly in January 2024 compared to January 2023, going from 5,715 units to 9,893 units. (+73.1%). Registrations of used electric cars by individuals also jumped by 94.7%. They increased from 285 units in January 2023 to 555 units in January 2024 (+94.7%).

Volkswagen and BMW were the best-selling used car brands, ahead of Mercedes, Opel and Peugeot. When it comes to the most popular models, the top 4 did not change in January. The VW Golf (2,540) came first, followed by the VW Polo (1,858), the Opel Corsa (1,742) and the BMW 3 Series (1,388).
