Use of peaceful space: UAE chairs UN committee Use of peaceful space: UAE chairs UN committee

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has been appointed chair of the United Nations Committee on the Use of Peaceful Space. Umran Sharaf, Director, Emirates Mars Mission, represented the UAE at the 65th Session of the Committee.

In her speech, Umran called for more international cooperation in preparing guidelines to maintain the long-term sustainability of space-related activities. At the ceremony, committee members approved the working group’s draft report on space and global health. The Chair of the Committee is in recognition of the UAE’s leadership in making great strides in the field of space. With the addition of five new countries, the committee became 100 members.

Umran Sharaf, project director of the country’s Mars mission, will serve as director of the committee. The UN Committee, which has been in operation since 1959, promotes the peaceful use of space and sets out laws and policies to facilitate space exploration.

It is a great honor to be elected Chairman of the Committee in the face of increasing militarization in space. The use of weapons and military technology in space is on the rise. In addition, gray satellites are used by many. In this case, the panel, which sets out policies and laws for the nations of the world, is carefully evaluated by experts. Umran was a member of the committee.
