iMessage on Windows – how it works

With Smartphone-Link there is an interesting program from Microsoft that can be used to integrate mobile phones under Windows. So far, Microsoft has only developed this half-heartedly, because if you don’t have an expensive Samsung phone, you only get a fraction of the functions.

In general, iPhones have been neglected so far. That changes with the update, which should better integrate Apple cell phones. The iPhone is still connected via QR code, following which a Bluetooth connection is mandatory.

You can then use the following smartphone functions under Windows: make calls, write messages and manage contacts. So you can with that Use iMessage on Windows PC. The integration into the Windows notifications is particularly practical.

But there are limitations: So far, you can only see the new function if you are a Windows Insider. In addition, no group notifications are supported and pictures and videos cannot be sent either.

Another mandatory requirement is that the iPhone is connected to the Windows PC via Bluetooth. If you receive a message via iMessage and only connect to the PC later, the iMessage is not visible. You will therefore not be able to see the entire course of the conversation on the Windows PC.

Also, in the case of sent and received messages, it is currently not possible to differentiate between SMS and iMessage, since all messages have the same color.

The implementation is currently far from “optimal”.

Unfortunately, the iMessage function will only be available permanently for Windows 11 users. So if you’re still using Windows 10, you’d have to upgrade or reinstall – provided your PC is compatible.
