One USB-C port to charge them all
European legislation voted at the end of 2022 in favor of a universal charger for all portable electronic devices. This directive aims to harmonize charging interfaces and communication protocols to promote the interoperability of this equipment. USB-C, a type of universal connector, has become the standard for charging electronic devices. It offers several benefits, including the ability to charge, transfer data, and even connect displays with the same cable.
This initiative is supported and adopted unanimously by the European Parliament. The Member States of the European Union have until December 28, 2023 to transpose these provisions into their respective legislation. In France, the National Frequency Agency (ANFR) will monitor the obligations arising from this directive and may penalize any findings of non-compliance.
Decoupled sale: no more charger in the box?
In addition to the adoption of USB-C, the legislation requires companies to offer a decoupled sale of the electronic device and the charger. This means that consumers will have the choice whether or not to purchase a charger with their new device. This measure aims to reduce the number of unused chargers and therefore electronic waste. Consumers will be informed of this specificity by means of a pictogram printed or affixed to the packaging of the product.
Apple has gotten ahead of this move by no longer supplying power adapters with iPhones since October 2020. However, to comply with the new legislation, manufacturers will need to add sticker or print a statement specifying this absence on the product packaging.
In addition to USB-C, more transparency!
To help consumers understand the charging capabilities of their devices, a label will be placed on the equipment packaging. This label will specify specifications for radio equipment charging capabilities and compatible charging devices. Importers and distributors must ensure the presence of this label on the product when it is put on sale.
This initiative is an important step towards greater transparency for consumers. It will not only reduce electronic waste, but also make life easier for consumers by avoiding the need to manage several types of chargers. With a single USB-C compatible charger, it will be much easier. And especially when traveling during which some households had to think regarding putting three or four different chargers in the suitcase.
