USB-C on iPhones 15 does not limit the use of accessories without MFi certification

As we have seen in recent months, the specifications of iPhones 15finally presented this week, were permeated with rumors — among them, that the door USB-C of the new models might restrict certain advantages, such as higher transfer rates and charging power, to only Apple-certified cables and accessories.

New information published by Ars Technica They indicate, however, that there are no such restrictions with the iPhone 15’s USB-C port.

We can confirm that these initial reports were incorrect and that iPhones have completely standard USB-C ports that work perfectly with all USB 3 and USB-PD compatible cables, chargers, and accessories (Power Delivery) existing devices, as well as other Apple devices.

According to the report, all USB-C chargers and cables without a certification chip had their compatibility tables updated this week to include all iPhone 15 models — including third-party chargers, such as those from mophie and Belkin, launched even before the announcement of the new line.

That’s not to say there won’t be some sort of licensing program available for iPhone-compatible USB-C accessories. But fears that these cables were necessary and that the iPhone wouldn’t work well with standards-compliant USB-C cables and chargers were unfounded.

They warned, however, that it is still necessary to test the new devices to know for sure how they will behave with different accessories connected to them.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that you still need to ensure that the cables support the higher transfer speeds (up to 10Gbps) of the iPhones 15 Pro/15 Pro Max — so you will need a USB 3 compatible cable for this.
