United States Synchronized Swimming Federation (USAAS) announced on a new inclusive policy that would allow athletes of any gender identity to compete in its competitions.
It is noted that athletes can choose the category “which, in their opinion, most closely matches their gender identity”, while they will not need to prove that they have undergone hormone therapy or undergone surgery.
The first pilot events will be the U.S. Junior Olympic Championships and National Masters Championships. To participate in them, transgender athletes will not need to be selected.
Under the new USAAS policy, athletes will be able to compete in women’s and men’s solos and duets (including if they identify as a woman or a man), solos and duets “gender sensitive” (when an athlete does not identify himself specifically as a female or male ), and there will be no gender restrictions in team competitions at all.
