Two people were killed Monday in a shooting that occurred in downtown Atlanta in the state of Georgia (southeast), local police announced, noting that a suspicious woman was arrested.
“The respondent was located at Atlanta International Airport, Hartsfield-Jackson, and taken into custody without incident,” police said on Twitter.
Another person was injured in this shooting, added the same source, without giving more details on this disaster.
Acting Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said the shootings did not appear to be random acts.
“We believe the individuals were likely targeted,” he told reporters, noting that authorities recovered a handgun at the airport.
For his part, the mayor of the city, André Dickens, indicated that the suspect had been apprehended before going through airport security.
Shootings remain a recurring scourge in the United States, claiming many victims in a country where the right to own weapons is guaranteed by the Constitution. According to observers, gun crime is on the rise in major cities like New York, Chicago, Miami or San Francisco, especially since the 2020 pandemic.
